Cape Reinga is one of the most spiritually significant places for the Maori . Here they believe that the spirits descend down into the sea. This tree ( at the right of the rock tip) is an 800+ year old Pohutukawa Tree. The roots form steps for the spirits to slide into the water to start their journey to the other world.
A lot of cultures believe in such places that link to the spirit world, its interesting.
